Frequently asked questions about Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

4. How does EFT work?

Answer. EFT works at the level of the subtle energies of the body. This energy flows through meridians of the body (used in acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine) in much the same way as blood flows through veins. EFT theory states that when a person has unresolved negative emotions or trauma, there is a corresponding block or disruption in the subtle energies of the body. By tapping on a series of acupuncture points with your fingertips while focusing your intention on the problem, you balance the body’s energy system and corresponding emotional and physical issues dissipate. If you have a balanced energy system, it is difficult for emotional issues, illness, stress and anxiety to short circuit your health.

5. How long will the positive effects of EFT last?

Answer. When applied correctly, the emotional healing benefits of EFT are nearly always long lasting. If the issue seems to have returned, it could be because the issue was addressed too globally. For example “fear of snakes” is a global issue to work on while “fear of seeing a green snake on the path” is more specific. It is also important to address issues that are related to the problem you are working on. For example, if your fear of snakes is not moving, try addressing a related issue like “I was freaked out when my brother put a snake in my bed when I was 6”.

When EFT is used for physical ailment, the healing response is impressive. If you have had pain subside with EFT but it returned, it is recommended that you do EFT for the emotional components of your physical pain in addition to tapping on the pain itself. This practice is likely to increase your chances of permanent pain relief.

Again, persistence and practice are the key to long-term success with EFT.

6. Are there negative side effects when using EFT?

Answer. During an EFT session, frequently people experience tears and upset while they are releasing old negative emotions and trauma. Usually the tears last, literally for moments and are replaced with smiles and even laughter as EFT releases the trauma. If tears arise, just keep on tapping and they will subside. More than 350,000 people have downloaded the EFT manual. EFT is so popular because it consistently provides great results and, the side effects are minimal. Gary Craig estimates that experienced EFT users have one client in 1000 that may have a negative reaction and often these are reported to be people who have experienced severe trauma and/or abuse in their lives and are suffering with severe psychological disorders. It is important to exercise common sense and refrain from using EFT on people who have such disorders unless you already have extensive experience in that field.
