In Part Two meet nine year old me who was accused of plagiarizing in third grade. We had an assignment to do some creative writing. I don’t remember what I wrote but my teacher told my mother that I couldn’t possibly be writing at that level. I must have had help. I must have stolen this from somewhere.

Unfortunately my mother believed my teacher. Do you think that’s enough to keep a kid from safely and seriously writing?

Here are some creative EFT, Tapping Phrases that I used to unstick this old disruptive memory thumbprint. Whether or not these phrases represent your own issues, I invite you to tap along with these anyway as you might just uncover something from your own life.

Even though I was told I was too young to be that good…
Even though I was accused of cheating and stealing…
Even though what I wrote was completely rejected by my teacher and my mother…
Even though I was proud of what I wrote and was punished…
Even though I learned that I had to tone it down – again…

Already, here were negative messages that I downloaded before I was age ten. In my experience, many people who identify themselves as writers did so from a young age and their adult writer’s block could usually be traced to an early, upsetting event where the creative child got the message that it was not ok to write (or draw, or dance, or sing, or be…).

When talking with clients, I describe the negative effect of these early events to be like thumbprints left in our energy system. As we get older, other things happen around writing and creativity, and the negative impact of these new events find that old thumbprint and in its place, leave a footprint, marking a deeper disruption.

Pretty soon, we are walking around with Bigfoot sized energy imprints that keep the creative energy blocked.

It takes a few moments to identify some of your own blocks and then start tapping to eliminate them. Maybe you have some experiences like I did. Somewhere along the way you likely got distinct messages about being a writer. Those messages may not have felt distinct at the time and they may not have been traumatic or earth shattering.

But start tapping on anything that comes to mind. Or start with the phrases I offer above. Often, underneath a few layers you’ll find some gold nuggets. It just takes some persistence.

Join me next time for some insight into how my father’s opinion kept me from following my dream of being a writer … and how I released those beliefs and went on to publish several books.

Part One

As I sent the final draft of another book off to the publisher, I realized that while writing this book, I never had any bouts of writer’s block. The main reason for the delicious absence of writer’s block is that I had already resolved the conflicts associated with writing by persistently using Energy Medicine techniques like EFT Tapping.

As a writers’ coach, when I work with people with writer’s block I want to unearth the thought, feeling, event or trauma that is stuck in your energy system that keeps you from writing (or doing any creative pursuit). That might mean that you hesitate to even pick up a pen, or sit at your computer to write the story that’s been in your head. Or you cringe at the thought of publishing your blog or having your boss read your annual report.
While working with countless writers, both professional and aspiring, I saw similarities and patterns that mirrored my own experience.

Some of the issues that many blocked writers face are around fear of exposure, fear of rejection , fear of failure, fear of success, to name a few. I know that if I hadn’t cleared my own writing fears with EFT, I would never have published a book, let alone two – actually three but one was ghostwritten! My belief is that any of these fears are enough to stop anyone from writing and they had to have come from somewhere.

One of the first questions to ask yourself is:
What are your first memories and experiences around writing?

One of the first things I knew about myself was that I was a writer. I was about six years old when I first wrote a story. I loved playing with words, creating puns, and finding new ways to say things. Unfortunately I showed my story to my parents who were very puritanical, and I was chastised for some of my wordplay. I continued to write but I very carefully kept my words to myself. Here is some tapping that was helpful for me.

Even though I was chastised for being creative…
Even though my mother didn’t understand that I was being creative, not nasty…
Even though I learned very early that it was inappropriate to be creative…
Even though it wasn’t safe to let anyone see what I’d written…
Even though I wrote what I felt and got in trouble…
Even though my mother was embarrassed by my writing…
